Bavarian cargobike hire project in evaluation phase

In September 2020, the state of Bavaria launched LastenRadBayern, an initiative to provide cargobike hire in seven towns.

The selection of the model municipalities was made in a jury meeting together with representatives of AGFK Bayern (Working Group on Bicycle-Friendly Municipalities e.V.) and ADFC Bayern (General German Bicycle Club e.V.) from a total of 99 applications.

With the project call by the Bavarian State Ministry for Housing, Construction and Transport, the Bavarian communities were informed about the model project and asked to apply.

In cooperation with Green City Experience GmbH and e-fect eG, TINK Walter & Wagner GmbH was commissioned by the Bavarian State Ministry for Housing, Building and Transport to advise the municipalities and accompanying scientific research.

The aim is to test and evaluate a sustainable municipal freight transport system and to check it for transferability to other municipalities. The model municipalities were supported with up to 90% of the eligible costs for the purchase of cargo bikes and the accompanying investments.

In order for the introduced cargo bike rental systems to be used by citizens to the greatest possible extent, the participating municipalities were provided with qualified technical advice and support so that the rental system is individually adapted to the local geographic, infrastructural, demographic and institutional circumstances of the municipalities can be.

The technical support also included an evaluation of the traffic effects of the cargo bike rental system. The results will be published after the 2024 project is completed. An exchange between the participating model communities is also to be organized.

Würzburg, for example, has had 45 cargobikes at 14 station.

The pilot phase is ending in December 2023. The evaluation phase has already started, with questionnaires to users and citizens at large.
